Sick, telling

The one word that leaps to mind while thinking of Criminal Minds (TV Series) is “disturbing”. And you need look no further than just a couple of episodes of this successful TV Series to figure out why. Perhaps the written word will not suffice, but here is my take. Hotchner (Thomas Gibson), with second-in-command David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) leads a highly qualified team constituting profilers with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico, Virginia, to solve crimes involving serial killings – usually of a violent, degenerate, and large-scale nature – in locations all over USA. Aiding them is the wonder woman Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), a genius at drawing associations between seemingly unconnected events, with the aid of a little technology. Executed with thoroughness, that does not flag between episodes – and I saw dozens – Criminal Minds is a must-watch – if, of course, you want to stomach it

Conan the Second

The Cimmerian is back, in a significantly watered down version that sank – some would say unfairly – with very little trace, at the box office. Such is the punishment for those that take on the Governator and his cult movies, even after close to 30 years! On to the story of Conan the Barbarian. Born in the midst of a war where he loses both parents even as arch-enemy Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang) appropriates the last piece of a mask of power that will help him rule the world, the next few (say 20-odd) years of Conan’s (Jason Momoa) life are a blur. Post this, in a serendipitious encounter, Conan finally picks up the trail of the perpetrators. The rest of the movie is a series of skirmishes and minor battles as Conan and his pirates friends hack and cleave through the enemy in their quest to destroy Khalar Zym and rescue the pure-blood Tamara (Rachel Nichols). A decent watch in its own right, but just an action movie nevertheless – till the aura of the predecessor fades, there is no room for a new Conan

Go Joes!

Expect the usual blend of high quality special effects and hand to hand physicality from GI Joe - The Rise of Cobra. A circumspect Duke (Channing Tatum) is on a mission to deliver certain warheads, runs into a skirmish with the “Joes” and ends up joining them, an enemy mission with former flame Ana (the Baroness, ie Sienna Miller) steals back the warheads, and a race against time ensues to save the worls from destruction. The series sees the creation of the GI Joe core team as well as their arch villains (Destro and Cobra). This is straight-up unbridled action without the morality tales of the Marvel comics superheroes that held our breath all of 2008. Good entertainment without appearing too gizmo-laden for comfort
