Running Forward

When an African-American boy learns to outrun older white boys with his trophy of scavenged bottle-caps, one would hardly imagine that the same skill-set would lead to the emergence of none other than the great Ernie Davis (Rob Brown), one of the greatest running backs of all time in college football. Ernie plays for Syracuse, and (in the natural drift of great sports movies) leads Syracause to the Heisman Trophy and becomes a figure of great inspiration. The Express is not the no-holds-barred realism of Any Given Sunday, but rather the poetic inspiration of Remember the Titans. While a good watch, as sports movies go, it is not particularly differentiated

Legion of Nonsense
We watched this movie in a movie hall. Two guys next to us slept through most of it, and left when they were done with their nap. At the end of Legion, the verdict all across that this was about as much nonsense that an audience can take, was almost unanimous. Now to the movie. God has tired of the human race, and would like to end it by turning the human race into a set of ravenous zombies that in turn turn other people into zombies, and so on. No way, says Angel Michael – humans are still full of the milk of (human) goodness – and launches a crusade in hick-town motel Paradise Lost against pestilence, repeated waves of zombie attacks, tests of human weakness, and manages to protect the birth of a baby who will ostensibly redeem mankind. With all the ingredients of a movie that is a thinly veiled attempt to milk sequels, this B-Grader has “flop” written over it in bold. This one will vanish without a trace. The underlying theme though, executed by a worthy cast and scriptwriter, could have had some justice served

Go Joes!
Expect the usual blend of high quality special effects and hand to hand physicality from GI Joe - The Rise of Cobra. A circumspect Duke (Channing Tatum) is on a mission to deliver certain warheads, runs into a skirmish with the “Joes” and ends up joining them, an enemy mission with former flame Ana (the Baroness, ie Sienna Miller) steals back the warheads, and a race against time ensues to save the worls from destruction. The series sees the creation of the GI Joe core team as well as their arch villains (Destro and Cobra). This is straight-up unbridled action without the morality tales of the Marvel comics superheroes that held our breath all of 2008. Good entertainment without appearing too gizmo-laden for comfort
